Seeing deaths in superhero movies isn’t uncommon, but that doesn’t make them any less hurtful. We ‘re pretty used to having bad guys meet their demise (that’s what everybody actually wants to see), but when a superhero meets his end, it’s a whole different story. It means the ends of his or her whole arc and with that character, there will be no more adventures, plot twists and love stories. Not to mention the equally devastating deaths of super-powerless human heroes! Here are nine deaths from superhero films that we still can not get over.
Groot (Guardians of the Galaxy)
How could one character gain so much love with just one line? Yet this is exactly what happened to Groot, who was only able to say ‘I am Groot,’ but turned out to be one of the most charismatic and caring characters we’ve seen. At the end of the film, when they were crash landing, he sacrificed his life to save the whole team. With his own tree-body, He protected them!
Spider-Man (Avengers: Infinity War)
This young Spidey made everybody fall in love with him, the minute we saw him in the films first. To see him literally turn into dust has been one of the most difficult things ever! Avengers : Infinity War has been a real tear-jerker, killing dozens of superheroes that we have all come to love. Still it was just too much to watch Tony holding young Spider-Man in his arms!
In The Avengers movie, Agent Coulson (The Avengers) met a horrible death at the hands of Loki, the God of Mischief. He was aiming at Loki with his powerful weapon, but the trickster was always behind him creating an illusion in front of the agent. Agent Coulson was stabbed from behind by Loki and the man died a little after Fury arrived to help. This was the defining moment that brought the entire team together-Captain America, Black Widow, Thor, Hulk, Hawkeye, and Iron Man as they had something to avenge for now.
Steve Trevor (Wonder Woman) Wonder Woman’s ending was a real tear-jerker as we watched Steve Trevor say good-byes to Diana who was still unconscious after a tough fight. He whispered “I love you” and rushed onto the blow-up plane. He succeeded in getting up into the air and died along with the blasted plane. Diana was furious and urt, helping her unleash her true powers and take Ares down. But at what price!
Yondu (Galaxy Guards Vol . 2) When we first saw Yondu, he seemed like another bad guy, who had some history with Peter Quill, but chose to work against him, instead of helping him save the galaxy and anything else. In the second film we learned that Yondu was Peter’s real father figure and although he initially kidnapped him to give to Ego, he never handed over the boy and raised him up to be an adventurer in space. After all, He loved him! After Ego ‘s death, Yondu sacrificed his life for Peter when the two ended up in open space with only one suite of space.
Gwen Stacy (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) You may or may not like the reboot of the classic Spider-Man story by Marc Webb but I think we can all agree that the chemistry between Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy was out of this world. They had been such a perfect match! That’s why it hurts so much to watch Spider-Man miserably fail to save the life of the person he cared for most. His beloved woman died at the end of the film, leaving all spectators devastated.
Thanos (Avengers: Endgame) This film was so painful to watch-it turned into dust a whole army of superheroes! Still, Thanos’s own demise is one of the most powerful moments in the movie. In the final act of destruction he snapped his fingers as he finally won and got the Infinity Gauntlet embedded with six Gems, only to see nothing happen. Then it was the turn of the Iron Man to snap fingers-it turned out the Gems were in his hand already. Thanos was devastated, solemnly watching his vast army turn into dust in a blink of an eye, until he dissolved into thin air himself.
Black Widow (Avengers: Endgame) Of all the characters in the last two Avengers movies that met their end, Black Widow ‘s death most hit fans. She had a heart of gold despite her past misdeeds, and helped everyone in need. She did not hesitate for a moment when it was time to choose who would survive and go for the Soul Stone-she or Hawkeye. Natasha gave her life, so that Hawkeye could once again meet his family!
Jean Grey (X-Men: The Last Stand) It turns out that Professor Xavier was suppressing a darker alter-ego within her mind. Phoenix revealed herself once things got heated, boasting powers that could destroy everything. Phoenix gets out of control at the end of the film, when she and Magneto storm Alcatraz to release the mutants that are held there, wreaking havoc everywhere. Logan is the only person capable of withstanding her powers and coming close enough to kill. Just when he reaches her, Jean Grey resurfaces one last time, begging by taking his life to save her and everyone else. Logan stabs Jean Grey in the final act of mercy, despite his love for her.
